Snow Storm Information

The Tarrytown Department of Public Works takes snow removal seriously. During snow storms, DPW manpower is maximized to clear roads in order of priority. Primary roads are cleared first, followed by secondary and then tertiary roads, which helps us keep roads open so that rescue vehicles are able to make their way, in case of emergencies that may arise during inclement weather conditions.

Snow and Ice Removal:

Property owners are responsible for snow and ice removal from contiguous sidewalks and, in the case of multifamily dwellings, all driveways and access and exit roads on the premises to be cleared of snow and ice within 18 hours after snowfall has ceased or ice has formed, except in the case of properties in the Restricted Retail Zoning Districts and the Neighborhood Shopping Zoning Districts in the Village, which shall have the snow and ice removed at all times between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Where snow has melted and has frozen or where there has been an ice storm and the contiguous sidewalks are frozen, the ice needs to be removed within two hours unless the ice forms between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m, in which case it should be removed by 7:00am. If the snow and ice cannot be removed, the owner or occupant of the abutting premises should use salt, sand, ashes, sawdust or other suitable material to be strewn upon the sidewalks, driveways and access and exit roads within the said period.

Snow Emergency

If the Superintendent of Public Works finds it necessary to declare a Snow Emergency in order to ensure clear and efficient snow removal operations, the following restrictions are in effect:

  1. No person shall park any vehicle or permit any vehicle to remain parked in designated snow zones during a Village-declared snow emergency or while the Village is engaged in removing snow from such places.
  2. During the period of a snow emergency, alternate side of the street parking restrictions shall be suspended for streets that have both snow zones and alternate side of the street parking restrictions. This suspension shall terminate upon the lifting of the snow emergency or four hours after the end of the snowfall, whichever is later.

General Guidance During Snow Storms

How Residents and Property Owners Can Help Assure the Safety and Efficiency of the DPW Snow and Ice Control Operations
  • Stay off the roads as much as possible.
  • Avoid parking on Village of Tarrytown streets during snow or ice events. Vehicle owners may be called by the town Police Department to remove vehicles which interfere with plow operations. Cars parked during snow emergencies will be ticketed and towed. Be cognizant of Snow Emergency conditions when declared by the Tarrytown Police Department.
  • Wear reflective clothing while walking on roads during plowing operations – avoid dark clothing and walking along the curb line.
  • Do not allow children to build and occupy “snow forts” and similar snow creations within 10 feet of the edge of pavement.
  • Do not relocate snow from driveways and sidewalks into the paved street.  This is in violation of New York State Highway Law (Article 8, Section 214) and will cause a hazardous condition on the street. Code Enforcement personnel will issue violations.
  • Shovel or plow an area to the right of your driveway exit to accommodate plowed snow from the street. This will help lessen build-up in your driveway apron when the road is plowed.
  • “Plowing in” driveways by DPW plows is inevitable and unavoidable. Raising plows at every driveway and then immediately dropping them after the driveway opening is not possible. Please schedule your private snow removal after the storm.
  • Yield to Plow Trucks and give them space to operate.
  • Cooperate with the Public Works Department to assure safe and efficient clearing of the roads.
  • Be patient, stay off the roads and let DPW provide you with safe winter travel.
