Board of Trustees in Brief

Report from Board of Trustees Meeting on 5.1.23

ICYMI, you can watch Village Board meetings online.

  • The Community Wardrobe: The founding members and directors of the Community Wardrobe, a program of the Horsemen PTA, presented to the Board of Trustees about the good work they have been doing to provide clothing and supplies for families in need in the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow communities. Their presentation can be found on the Village website. The Community Wardrobe provides appointments for families in need, offering a shopping experience for items donated by the community with an emphasis on dignity for the program's clientele. Having just moved into a new permanent location at 222 N. Washington Street in Sleepy Hollow, the program is in need of funding for the first time since it was founded three years ago. They are conducting a fundraising campaign to help cover rent and utilities, and would appreciate any support the community is willing to offer. Information about how to donate can be found on their website.
  • Open Streets Tarrytown: The Village is launching a new series of downtown events in the warm weather months to replace the weekly outdoor dining events that took place during the pandemic. Once a month, May through September, Main Street will open up to dining, shopping and strolling, and close to vehicular traffic. The events will feature live music, activities for all ages, outdoor dining and themed specials at local merchants. The first events will take place from 10am to 3pm on Mother's Day, Sunday May 14. The remaining events will take place in the evenings from 6pm to 10pm. The Board of Trustees approved the following dates and themes for the Open Streets events:
  • June 10 - Pride
  • July 15 - Health and Wellness
  • August 19 - Local History
  • September 23 - Hispanic Heritage

The online event page with additional detail can be found here.

  • Metro North Agreement for New Plantings: The Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council (TEAC) will be working with volunteers and the Department of Public Works to plant the beds and tree wells in front of the Metro North Train Station. The planting project is supported by a very generous donation by James and Oak Fitzgerald, two Tarrytown residents. Many thanks to James and Oak and all of the TEAC volunteers who contribute time and energy to making Tarrytown even more beautiful, particularly this important gateway area for the Village. The agreement with Metro North allows the Village staff and volunteers to install and maintain the plantings on Metro North property. TEAC is looking for volunteers to assist with all of their plantings this season. See below for more information and to sign up.

Coming up:

At the next Work Session, the Board will discuss the presentation they heard at the last Work Session from the owners of 303 South Broadway about adaptive re-use of the building, as well as the extension of a cooperative agreement between the Village, the Quay and the Thruway Authority to secure a permanent easement that accommodates the Scenic Hudson RiverWalk Extension, among other items. The full agenda for the Work Session can be found here.

Tuition Reimbursement Program for EMS AND Fire Volunteers

Citizen volunteers are often called on to respond to emergency situations in Westchester County. Due to a variety of factors, local volunteer fire departments and volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members.

As an incentive for local residents to serve at volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services (DES), has developed a program of recruitment and retention incentives for volunteer emergency services agencies. The program is designed to provide tuition or student loan reimbursement to volunteers for their service in the County.
